Can You Stucco Over the Brick?

If you're thinking of updating the look of your brick residence or want to change the look of the appearance of a brick exterior that has been damaged using stucco, it's an innovative option that will improve the appearance of your home and curb appeal. We've analyzed and explained below the main advantages and disadvantages of stucco to aid you in determining whether stucco is the best option for you.

As both stucco and brick are both masonry products, in most instances, stucco is able to be directly applied to brick. A water absorption test can be used to determine whether stucco can adhere directly to brick or if a thorough clean-up, bonding agents, or a metal frame is required for the stucco to stick properly. Paint and dirt may stop stucco from adhering properly, and improperly installed stucco can result in future issues such as cracking or water damage.

If you've learned the things to avoid before applying stucco, then let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of this versatile exterior coating.

           Advantages of Stucco

           Durability

Stucco can be used to protect your home from termites, mold, and fire. But how long will stucco last in a home? If it is applied to brick, you can anticipate stucco to last between 40 and 50 years, based on the climate in which you live.

           Color Retention

The stucco's pigments help maintain color and lessen the need to paint your home as frequently as other materials, such as wood.

           Texture

Stucco is available in a variety of different textures to give your home a design that is in line with your preference.

           Noise Reduction

Stucco naturally protects your house from noise pollution outside and is particularly beneficial when you live in a highly-trafficked area.

           Does Stucco Increase Home Value?

If it is installed correctly and kept in good shape, stucco is a great option to give your home a smooth appearance that is preferred by prospective buyers. The additional curb appeal can be a significant boost in the market value of your home, especially if you're looking to sell your home.

           Disadvantages of Stucco

           Maintenance

Its texture draws dirt, so regular cleaning is necessary to keep the stucco looking nice. Cleaning can be done using the help of a garden hose. To tackle more challenging staining, the use of a detergent is recommended.

Can you pressure wash the stucco?

Pressure washing isn't the ideal choice because of the fragile finish stucco has. If needed, stucco could be washed using low pressure at a distance of 2 feet.

           Inflexibility

The structure of stucco is not pliable, and cracks can occur because of natural settlement. It is crucial to repair holes and cracks as fast as possible in order to keep the stucco looking great and to avoid any further harm.

           Porosity

Stucco naturally retains moisture and could cause water damage if not properly maintained. The metal flashings around windows and doors should be in good shape and repaired as needed prior to applying stucco in order to stop water from leaking between brick and stucco, which could cause damage to them both.

           Labor Costs

The process of applying stucco is a highly specialized task that requires a lot of labor as it is laid out in layers and usually requires skilled professionals to ensure the proper installation. This means that the cost of labor for stucco, in comparison to other options, such as siding, is more costly.

           Project Planning

If you're taking on the task yourself, you must first ensure that the climate is suitable. Avoid temperatures that are too hot or freezing. If you are able, design your project around several overcast days with temperatures of 50-60. When buying materials, figure out the amount of stucco mix you'll need. Because color and texture can differ, buying all the materials together will guarantee an even matching.

Can Stucco Be Over Those Expansion Joints?

Stucco is a beautiful material for exteriors of homes. However, can you use stucco for those expansion joints? You'd like a smooth appearance and are worried about the way that lines from the expansion joints could cause your home to look unattractive. We've done our research to discover the solution to this issue for you.

Legally, the majority of building codes require that you have expansion joints within your stucco, especially when you're stuccoing on lath. Therefore, your builder is likely to insist that you have these joints. Some builders are even willing to stucco solid if they accept a contract that says you don't hold them accountable for any cracks that may occur on the surface of the stucco. The short answer is that you can stucco on expansion joints; however, there is a greater chance of cracking.

Let's examine this in greater detail before we address some more questions.

Can You Stucco Over Expansion Joints?

Expanding joints refer to the horizontal and vertical joints you can see cutting across the top of stucco-finished buildings. They can be positioned imaginatively, like in the contemporary house above, to make them an element of the overall design. Some people do not like lines crossing their stucco finishes and would like to know if they are able to stucco around joints.

Why Not Stucco ACROSS The Expansion Joints?

The function of this expansion joint is to permit the stucco material to contract and expand in response to temperature changes. This prevents it from cracking at will. One of the places where cracks could occur is in the corners of doors and windows and making them more obvious. Expansion joints basically act as the first to crack your stucco before they actually crack. There is already a crack in place, so the surface remains pristine.

Why Not Stucco OVER Your Expansion Joints?

If the aesthetics of a jumble of intersecting lines on your structure is not appealing to you, and you're not concerned about the hairline cracks that can occur in your stucco construction over time, you can skip the expansion joints completely. It is possible to stucco on masonry without lath or put in lath without expansion joints.

           Does Stucco Expand and Contract?

Stucco can expand or contract with the temperature. Additionally, since different areas of your home are heated and cooled in different ways due to directions and other elements, the expansion and contraction could differ, too. This is why you'll see expansion joints within the stucco because, without them, water could get through cracks, which could damage the sheathing of your house beneath the stucco.

What Is the Contrast between Expansion Joints and Control Joints?

Expansion joints can be described as vertical or horizontal joints that are used in masonry or stucco which are not surrounded by mortar. They can be expanded or contracted due to thermal or problems with moisture. Control joints, on the other hand, can be used in concrete-based applications. They are typically vertical and filled with mortar and include the bond breaker on the other end. This allows the mortar used to control joints to expand when the concrete or masonry expands and prevents cracks from forming. Both are essential in the construction process.

Should You Lath Over Expansion Joints?

The expansion joints exist to provide a space for expansion and shrinkage. It would be in contradiction to their intended purpose. It is essential to have a gap in order to prevent potentially dangerous cracks from forming within your stucco finish. As per the International Building Code, lath should be cut in the joint and wire tacked on the edges of the joint. So the stucco finish will not be able to cross it.

How to Remove Those Moss From Your Stucco?

Commonly used as a finishing for exteriors, stucco gives homes a rough appearance that distinguishes it from other homes. Similar to other home exterior coverings, moss could start to develop on the stucco. The nonflowering plant can trap moisture between it and stucco, thereby creating the perfect environment for fungi such as mold. In addition, moss could cause unsightly stains on the stucco. Take away moss from the stucco at the earliest time possible to avoid damage and discoloration on the outside of your house.

            Step 1:

Wear protective goggles as well as rubber gloves. Take off the surface moss from the stucco using an broom brush. The stucco should be dampened with the water hose.

           Step 2:

Place 1-gallon water that is lukewarm in the bucket. Include 1 cup oxygen bleach, and stir it with one spoon till the oxygen bleach disintegrates. Oxygen bleach can remove moss, mold, mildew, and algae without harming and discoloring stucco. In addition, oxygen bleach does not cause harm to vegetation.

           Step 3:

Attach an extension handle to scrub brushes and then soak the bristles of the brush with the mix. Begin to scrub the stucco with the brush using a back-and-forth motion. Continue scrubbing until you've completely cleaned the stucco.

           Step 4:

The oxygen bleach mixture should remain on the stucco for fifteen minutes. This will allow the bleach the chance to remove the moss and any leftover mold. Clean the stucco by using the water hose. Continue the procedure as.

            Tips:

You can find oxygen bleach in the laundry aisle of a variety of department stores.

           Exterior Moisture

Moisture is a major enemy of stucco. Moreover, elements like snow and freezing rain, as well as ice, can rapidly damage stucco. On the exterior, the snow, rain and melting ice seep into the stucco, which will cause it to expand and then grow. This can cause the stucco's structure to break away from its wall, thus forming an opening in the wall where moisture could be trapped and cause further damage. Once the moisture has percolated or penetrated the stucco, changing temperatures can cause further damage and cause the stucco to break because the water it holds expands and shrinks in response to the changing weather.

           Interior Moisture

The moisture that is trapped between the stucco and the wall may cause huge bubbles to form in the stucco. The bubbles will eventually grow to the point that they pop out, and the stucco is ripped off the wall. They also persist throughout winter until they dry and shrink and crack in the process of shrinking. The water that's trapped in them, if left enough, may also cause an environment where mold can develop between the stucco and the wall. This is particularly common during temperatures in winter, where they will begin to rise quickly after a rain or snowstorm.

           Cold, Dry Weather

Stucco is a good choice for winter weather conditions if they're dry but cold climates. The temperature fluctuations cause the stucco's swell as well as shrink but not as much as other materials such as metal or wood. So long as the stucco's surface is not contaminated by moisture, the shrinking, as well as expansion, won't cause any damage, and the stucco won't be damaged by the cold winter weather. Stucco is also well-suited to the cold and windy weather where there isn't excessive water.

Stucco, a versatile siding material, is very popular. It is an affordable and easy-to-install siding option that lasts a long time. There is a lot of stucco texture variation, and different finishes will result in very different results.

Stucco can also be found in many architectural styles. These include English countryside manor homes and Mexican adobe houses. You need to pick the right finish for your home. Understanding the various textures of stucco can help you make an informed decision. You will be able to choose the best stucco finish for your dream home.

           1. Cat Face Finish

Montalvo and California finish are other names for this finish. Cat face stucco, as its name suggests, can often look like cat faces. But you will need to have some imagination. The wall will have a mostly smooth finish with some rough patches or inclusions. These rough patches can be either large or small and can be spaced closer together or further apart, depending upon your preference.

           Technique

You can achieve cat face stucco by applying two coats. After allowing it to dry, a rough coat of stucco should be applied. This can be done with a trowel or stucco sprayer. Next, apply a topcoat and smoothen it down with a metal trowel. You can let the base coat show through, so the cat's face will be exposed.

           2. Dash

The roughcast stucco, also known as dash, is one of the most textured stucco finishes. It's very rough and is usually sprayed. This gives it a rough, gritty appearance. There are many variations of dash stucco. These include heavy dash and fine dash, as well as knockdown and pebble dash.

           Technique

The wall is given a base coat of stucco and then raked to create a stucco effect. Next, stucco must be sprayed onto the wall with a hopper gun. You can also use a trowel to "dashed" the stucco onto a wall. Finer sprays will produce a finer dash, and heavier sprays will create a heavy dash.

           Knockdown Dash

A knockdown dash can be added as an extra step. This is accomplished by sanding the stucco with a metal trowel. You can knock down the stucco's peaks by using long, straight strokes.

           Pebble Dash

Sometimes fine gravel and shell remnants may be added to the stucco blend. It is sometimes called pebble dash or roughcast stucco when gravel is added. After the base coat has dried, the mix is applied to the wall. The stickiness of the pebbles creates a pleasant texture.

           3. Lace

Take your pick: lace, skip and lace, or trowel and skip. This unique finish can take many forms, not just the delicate lace for which it is named. This finish is the most widely used and common in stucco. This finish is popular because it hides flaws well.

Lace stucco has a very smooth base coat followed by a texture coat. You apply the texture by spraying it on and then dragging a wet trowel across the surface. You can create intricate patterns that are unique by skipping using the trowel. Depending on how heavy you apply the trowel, you can create fine or medium finishes.

What color stucco looks best with a black roof?

Stucco is a material that homeowners may not think of when planning a new exterior. The exterior of a home is often the first thought. Bricks, vinyl siding, and stones are common choices. But stucco can be a beautiful option for all of these options.

Stucco is made of concrete, water, and lime. Stucco is a lightweight, breathable cement that can be laid around the exterior of a home. The great thing about stucco is its porous nature. It allows water to evaporate, which prevents any water damage. Stucco can crack and chip easily, so it will need to be maintained more often.

           White Stucco

Combining a white stucco roof with a black roof creates a striking and versatile combination. The stately white color combination makes large manors look sophisticated and elegant. The stunning high-end charm created by the black roof and wrought iron accents will be reflected in the wrought steel roof.

A black roof and white stucco work perfectly together for modern and contemporary homes. If paired with a minimalistic color palette, the straight lines of the roof are a modern design element.

           Grey Stucco

Grey stucco allows you to adopt a modern palette but will still retain a warm, homey feeling. While white and black can be too stark for some designs, grey stucco creates a softer version of a versatile color.

Grey stucco can give a home a charming and delicate appeal. Grey stucco can be paired with black window trims and a roof to create a sophisticated style that is not too abrasive.

           Beige Stucco

Beige and other browns and tones are warm and elegant. The black roof and stucco combination can look simple but elegant. This color combination is great for adding accent colors.

There are many ways to add color to beige or black, such as shutters, doors, and porch furnishings. You can add warmth to your home exterior with earthy tones such as burnt orange and moss. For a bold color, emerald and turquoise are great choices.

           Black Stucco

Black stucco is a popular choice for a roof. Black homes are dramatic and rich. If you want to create drama in your home, keep the exterior entirely black and let the landscaping add color. To create a modern, dark home with a lot of style and color, you can use all-wood accents along with gold or silver decor.

Can stucco be sprayed over an existing stucco?

Stucco is a material that can be used to cover concrete, brick, or cinderblock and is primarily used for exterior construction. Stucco can be made of aggregate such as cement or sand and is applied to a substrate while it is still wet. Stucco can be sprayed onto a surface to create a solid surface. Once dried, it hardens to a solid material. Modern stucco is often made with acrylic fiber or other synthetic materials. These add strength and weather-proofing capabilities. Stucco is durable and can withstand harsh climates. Spraying new stucco can fix cracks, holes, and other damage to the stucco.

           The Old Stucco: A Study

Stucco must only be applied to surfaces that have the potential to form a bond. Existing stucco can be sprayed with new stucco, provided a strong bond can be made. Stucco that has been sprayed or applied to other stucco types will not be held in place by old stucco. Before applying stucco to old stucco, make sure you inspect the stucco for cracks and hollow spots. Visual examination can identify cracks. By tapping the stucco lightly with your hammer, you can find hollow spots.

           Repairing and cleaning old stucco

You can fill cracks in old stucco with your hands. Use approved stucco. The old stucco should have any hollows removed and hand-patched. You should scrub all surfaces of old stucco with a stiff toothbrush to remove dirt, contaminants, debris, and any flaking stucco. Clean stucco with a hose or scrub brush. If the stucco is very dirty, you should use a pressure washer before applying stucco. Let the old stucco dry completely.

Surface Prep for Old Stucco

Apply a bonding agent before applying stucco. A bonding agent is a liquid that bonds stucco to the substrate. You can apply the liquid bonding agents by rolling or brushing the old stucco. You should refer to the manufacturer’s specifications. They usually state that the agent can be used once and then re-emulsified.

The bonding agent will reactivate the stucco and bond it with the wet stucco after it dries. The bonding agent must be activated only once it has dried. If the dry time is not sufficient, the agent will have to be reapplied. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific applications and coverage. Use only the amount that can be used with wet stucco that day. Apply the bonding agents on the day they are applied. Overnight humidity and dew will activate them and make them useless.

What to learn about different types of stucco finishes for your house?

Stucco is a very popular option for home construction. Stucco is a versatile building material that homeowners love for its durability. A stucco exterior can be customized to match the texture of your home. You can also choose from brighter colors than exteriors made with brick or siding.

           Stucco Systems

Three different methods can be used to apply stucco. Each system provides a unique finish and durability. One-coat stucco systems are the fastest. They have a base coat and a finish coat that’s sprayed. The three-coat (also known as hard coat) stucco system features two base coats along with a finish coat. This makes them more durable and long-lasting than single-coat stucco finishes. EIFS, or synthetic stucco, is made up of two coats of stucco on top of a foam insulation panel. It can be durable if it has a proper water drainage system.

           Common Finishes

Whatever general stucco technique you choose, it is important to select a finishing texture. The majority of stucco companies offer a choice of four textures: dash, lace, scraped or float. A scraped stucco finish is the most smooth. It’s simply created by smoothing the stucco using a steel instrument. A dash finish is a rough stucco with small peaks of stucco. Sand texture finishes are similar to grains of sandy sand. With a look that resembles a heavy lace fabric, lace texture finishes offer more visual appeal.

           Decorative Finishes

You can also apply decorative finishes to your home to create a personal look. They are usually done using a three-coat stucco system. Stucco can look like brick or a wet-grooved plaster treatment to make it look like tiled walls. Trowel sweep finishes can also be used to add decorative touches. These include a repeating fan design, combed, which has thin vertical lines and briar, which uses random lines that are created by pushing the trowel into the stucco.

           Paints and Colors

The stucco finish offers homeowners more options for choosing a color for their home. The home can be painted, colored stucco, or an acrylic finish. Stucco colored with color cracks and stains easily, but it is easier to add decorative finishes. The best option for painted stucco is synthetic stucco. This gives it a brighter look but needs to be maintained every few years. Acrylic stucco has the longest-lasting finish and is less susceptible to cracks than colored stucco.

External Painting Benefits of Elastomeric for Stucco

The exterior paint of your home is more than a boost of curb appeal. It also increases the protection of your home. When it comes to stucco exteriors, the proper coat of paint can keep your stucco safe for a long time. Particularly, elastomeric paints are the ideal option to provide extra support and protection for stucco walls.

           What is elastomeric painting?

Although painting the outside of your house offers many benefits for aesthetics, it also has numerous practical benefits. With rain, wind, and snow, the outside of your house gets plenty of wear and tear. Paint is an additional layer of protection; however, elastomeric paints are a more effective choice for protection. Its structure helps to shield concrete surfaces, particularly stucco exteriors. Elastomeric paint also has the ability to be tinted, which means you can alter the appearance of your exterior home!

Elastomeric coatings are applied as paint; however, the elastomeric coating has a greater solids content than paint. Due to this, the coatings are more robust and flexible, which makes them perfect for outdoor use. After the coating has dried, it is still flexible, providing a waterproof seal. Before you decorate your stucco with paint, it needs to be ready for painting! Follow these tips for maintenance and tests to prepare your stucco to paint.

           The advantages of elastomeric coatings

The primary advantage of elastomeric coatings lies in their capacity to provide an impervious seal to your stucco and home. Wear and tear can make stucco insecure, but elastomeric coatings can stop cracks. When applied, the elastomeric acts as a shield to protect your stucco from harsh weather. After the coating has dried, it will retain its flexibility and mobility.

Elastomeric coatings are also an energy-efficient option since it wicks away the heat as well as are UV-resistant. Even in summer your home will remain cool, and your power bills will remain low! While paint can be an affordable option, elastomeric coatings can endure for years. In addition to sealing dirt, it will keep your stucco in a low-maintenance state. Any dirt that gets on the stucco can easily be cleaned away with the help of soap and water as required.

           Let the pros do it.

Although the elastomeric coating can be applied in the same way as the paint, it requires a certain level of expertise. Professional painters are experts in the application of elastomeric coatings. They have the knowledge and know-how to deliver the highest quality and professional final. Professional painting is not just time-saving and hassle, but it also can increase the value of your home. You'll enjoy a professional finish and work done by an experienced professional, which can be attractive to buyers.

When To Repair Or Replace Stucco

Stucco is a well-known choice of siding for homes, and it can give your home a distinctive style and worth. Although it usually requires very little maintenance, there are times when it does require some care. Understanding when stucco should be replaced or repaired is crucial to keep your home secure.

Evidence of damage to stucco

The most frequent indication of damage to stucco is cracks that appear on the surface. While a tiny crack might not indicate anything immediately, multiple cracks can be an indication of trouble. Cracks that are more than 1/4-inch wide could be a sign of structural issues that require attention. They could result from the settlement of the house or water entering through the cracks. Stains are another indication of trouble and should not be just painted over. If they're the result of moisture, the issue can quickly grow and cause the stucco to break off.

           Replace or Repair?

Depending on the severity of damage to the stucco surface, it can generally be repaired using patching. Patch jobs like this can be done by yourself when you have the expertise and time. The larger cracks on stucco that are peeling off aren't as easily fixed. The stucco first requires removal and the surface to be repaired. After that, a brand new stucco layer is able to be put on. When you're dealing with a project like this, you should leave it to the professionals. They'll have the equipment, skills, and knowledge to do the task in a safe manner. Even small repairs should be handled by an expert to cut down on time and ensure the job is done right.

Have a professional inspect your home

If you spot cracks like hairline of your stucco, don't overlook them. Make sure you seek out a professional to assess your stucco. If there's an underlying problem that is causing the crack, it's important to have the damage fixed as quickly as possible. Even if it's not indicative of anything important, ask your contractor to repair the hole. It will protect your home over time and help keep the stucco of great quality. Cracks that are small can result in water leaking into the home, damaging the stucco, and posing a risk of entering the structure of your home. If nothing else, strong stucco is crucial to keep the curb appeal of your home.

Best Colors To Dress Up Your Stucco

Stucco has been a popular choice for a long time and is an extremely popular option for exteriors of homes. But it is important not to allow your stucco to appear old-fashioned. This is why some colors can help. With the right design, your home will be an eye-catching part of your community and provide an all-new curb appeal.

           Color tips

Before purchasing any color, make sure you take a look at your home and the landscape around it. What colors are already present? The grass is green and plants and maybe pink or red flowers. Do the frames of your windows and doors come in a particular color that is neutral, like brown, white, or black? Consider what is already in place to assist you in selecting the perfect shade that is complementary to it. This way, the new stucco shade will not only enhance your home but will also enhance the overall look of your home.

           Pure white

As a contemporary white kitchen, white is the most popular choice of color, and so is a stucco home that is all white. Its design offers a sleek contemporary look and is easy to pair with other colors. A front door with a feature color, for instance, would make a statement against white walls. The window frames painted in bright or black will make their appearance stand out and provide the appearance of grandeur to your house.

           Black and bold

On the other hand, an all-black stucco residence is a chic, cool, and bold option. It's a fantastic option to draw attention to other color features of your property or to play using darker accents. Dark browns, deep reds, or blues are great combinations to go with the black hue of your home. You could also choose to go to a darker style and mix in shades of whites or greys to create a distinctive look.

           Charming pastels

If you're looking to add some hue to your house, it is possible to go by choosing pastel hues. A blue house like this one is an adorable and fun design that goes well with various architectural styles. A home with a pastel pink color can be a wonderful way to give a more historical style to your house while still allowing enough room to style shutters or doors. Greens provide a natural and softer appearance to your home and can easily blend into any landscaping features.

           Classic gray

If you're seeking a classic color selection, you won't be wrong with a gray hue. With a variety of colors that are available, such as blue or green-toned grays, there are many ways to play in the design. It's also good to choose if your house has additional accents like brick pillars or stone cladding. The gray stucco color will draw out those natural hues and provide a contemporary style to your house.

White Stucco Creates An Inspiring Vision

Ancient stucco was utilized in the time of the Greeks along with the Romans as well. It was white in color and made of white marble or stone powder amalgamation as well as lime slaked. At the time, color was not applied during mix-up, but rather when decorating the wall with new plaster. This tiny detail of history illustrates how much stucco is adored in decorating homes for the interior and exterior, even to this day. Imagine this, you gaze on a stunning stucco house built by architects using the traditional stucco method of building attractive exteriors and interiors as a striking modern design.

This exterior home looks like an elegant wedding cake. It's delicious and festive. The shutters and door, which are a pastel blue, add just the right amount of trimming and create a stunning exterior that's fun to take a look at! It's a home that is unique in design. The exterior has a warm impression. The stunning views of the ocean are breathtaking, which adds to the overall festive look of the home.

The furniture on the veranda provides residents with the opportunity to unwind and take in the tranquil ocean. It's spacious, grandiose, and uplifting. A home created for effortless luxurious living. It's elegantly luxurious and offers all the amenities a person with impeccable tastes could want.

The interior is similar to the interior of an outdoor playhouse. It's soft, bright, welcoming, and enjoyable. The inside's comfort doesn't reduce the lavishness of the space, but it is a reflection of earthiness and quiet beauty. High-beamed sealing can be connected to ceiling fans for cooling while the glass door opens to the outdoors.

The pastel blue and white theme is prevalent throughout the house, with a few splashes of powerful, intense colors added everywhere. The bedroom is serene and a wonderful spot to rest after a long day outdoors. The furnishings are minimalist, storage space is sufficient, lighting is soft, and the white walls match the minimal design.

The bathroom is like having a huge marshmallow. Its starkly white interior looks delicate and soft. It's a comfortable place to refresh or prepare for and then look forward to a lovely day.

The design and architecture of the exterior and interior are perfectly interspersed. It really appears to be one large space with a stunning blue ocean. A living area, a separate kitchen, as well as two guesthouses along with a bathroom inside, are all part of this magnificent structure. The upper level has a private porch that is facing north, creating an inviting atmosphere and stunning views.

A summer house or a perfect getaway or a residence that is year-round with a breathtaking view is what makes this home a home, regardless of how long a person stays!

Textured and even excavated interior walls--the kind with gorgeously exposed plaster or peeled-back wallpaper--are in fashion. The other types of walls with texture, such as the "orange peel," popcorn, or faux-stucco walls, could be a problem for your home or rental.

           What are the textured walls?

Walls with textures (think about these: "orange peel," popcorn swirls, or orange peel) serve a purpose as the texture conceals the traces of drywall installation, that is, the seams that are taped between the drywall sheets meet and other flaws. It's cost-saving. Maybe people loved it back in the 1970s, but the main reason that it's being done today is to reduce costs. It's inexpensive and quick.

It's the reason you'll find rough walls in rental and commercial structures. It's also a much more durable wall than smooth walls and is less susceptible to small scratches and tears. Some people feel that the texture is a nice touch: texture reflects light and casts shadows, making walls that aren't as "boring."

Methods to rid yourself of textured walls that are not needed:

Many of us believe that the most desirable wall is the smoothest one that you can find. Here are some strategies to transform a rough surface into a smooth one. These techniques also work on walls that are damaged in different ways (should you get tired of the old-fashioned plaster look in the near future).

           1. Apply a coat of skim.

After the installation of drywall, it is taped, and the fasteners seams are skim-coated and covered with a thin layer of joint compound, also known as "mud," to level the surface prior to papering or painting. The same method can get rid of walls that are textured. A thin layer of mud is sprayed over the entire surface of the wall and let dry; after that, it is sanded until smooth. Particularly bumpy walls might require multiple coats.

The process of skimming over a room is messy and takes a lot of time. It is best left to an expert who has the knowledge (and methods) to prevent the dust of sanding from contaminating every crevice in your house.

After the surface has been made smooth, it is then coated with a primer and later wallpapered or painted according to your desire.

           2. Replace the textured wall using new, untextured drywall.

This could be less expensive than skim coating the whole room. It's probably your best choice if the texture is particularly heavy--such as the stucco look you might see in a Spanish-style home. However, be aware that installing new drywall can also mean skim-coating to seal the seams to create an even surface, along with dust and dirt that comes with it.

           3. The walls should be covered with another material, like wood.

Wood paneling is becoming more popular in recent times. Flooring companies are creating walls now using beautiful wood. If you're interested in industrial design, this can be extremely attractive.

To solve the issue, it is possible to take the baseboards off and then run the paneling down toward the flooring. We recommend installing a Fry Reglet metal component that is used to hold the panel's bottom to the floor just above it to appear like it's floating (the metal part is virtually invisibly).

The alternative is to take out the baseboards, place some of the stock wood on the lower part of the wall, and then reinstall the baseboards flush to the paneling.

           Remodeling 101: Modern Plaster Walls

Are you gazing at walls recently? We're sure we have. It's because the plaster of various forms of transfixing is making an impressive return. Plaster-finished interiors are luminous and have a depth that changes with the lighting, quietly changing the feel and appearance of a home. And there's no painting required: Left in its raw state, plaster is an environmentally sound natural material--breathable and free of chemicals and VOCs.

It's true that plaster walls cost more than painted walls; this is because they're more labor-intensive to put up (most require three coats). They're also generally longer-lasting and beautiful. For interior projects, here are some major categories worth considering, which are illustrated with some of the most loved designs of the past few years.

Before taking the plunge at home, take a look at the specifications for your substrate. All plasters must be bonded to a surface. The bonding process is different for each type and brand, as is the durability and waterproofness of the particular type of plaster. The ability to trowel is required, as well as patience: You need to keep waiting for every layer of plaster to dry.

           Clay Plaster

Made up of sand, clay, and pigments, the clay plaster is considered to be healthy; it is often utilized by those who suffer from chemical sensitivities. It is available in powdered form with a variety of earthy tones and sometimes rough finishes. While it's not suitable for use in areas that are wet, like bathrooms and kitchens, clay plaster has water-absorbing (and desorbing) capabilities that make it an ideal humidity regulator in other areas of the home. For application, mix it with water on site (achieving the perfect consistency requires some trial and error) and then apply to a primed, sanded surface in layers of four or five.

           Slaked Lime Plaster

That's the kind of plaster walls in your great grandparents' home. Beginning with wood lath, an impermeable "scratch coat" (plaster mixed with aggregates that prevent shrinkage, like horse hair) was then applied, and then followed by the "brown coat" (plaster mixed with sand), then the thin skim coating. Made up of limestone, which has been heated to extreme temperatures to eliminate all impurities, hydrated or slaked lime plaster is an aged form which means that, unlike other alternatives, it isn't necessary to mix it by hand and is not restricted in time for applying it.

Pure white in its most basic form, it is now available in a wide range of shades. Unpainted, just like clay plaster, it soaks in moisture, then releases it. And unlike clay plaster, it can serve in kitchens as well as baths (but should not be exposed directly to the water). If you want, it is possible to add a layer of bee's wax or Marseilles soap may be added.

Stucco or Veneer? The Best Finish for Your Steel Building

One of the biggest inquiries we get from clients who are considering buying steel structures is the "finish" for the exterior. When we imagine a steel structure, it is likely to look dull and gray. But this exactly isn't the case! Metal structures can be found in a range of styles, colors, and decorative finishes like stucco, brick veneer, and faux rock or stone. If you're unsure regarding a metal structure because you are worried it will not be visually appealing, check out the following list and decide which one is the most effective for you. We're confident that a metal structure doesn't need to be boring; it can be attractive and appealing.

           STUCCO

Stucco is among the most sought-after facade options offered. It is a great way to enhance the appearance and blend into your surroundings when it is a limiting aspect. Stucco is also an option that will enhance the appearance of your metal structure--attractive and also affordable. There are three options for using stucco on the exterior of your metal building: traditional stucco, stucco panels, and stucco flex.

           Traditional stucco

looks similar to the style that can be seen on homes for residential use. For this appearance, it is integrated into the metal building plans but often requires a spandrel beam in order to support the wall load on the exterior. If a spandrel beam is required, this will certainly cost more to build, but for certain types of exterior finishes, it could be an important element in selecting the type of building.

           Stucco panels

may be erected directly on the structure, much similar to traditional siding. The panels provide the appearance of stucco as well as increase insulation. They can be found in a variety of shades.

            Stucco flex

is the most affordable alternative for stucco for steel structures. It's a spray-on product that is applied to the corrugated siding of the metal as well as foam board. The stucco flex will give an appearance of flat stucco.

           BRICK VENEER

Brick veneer can be bonded to the frame using a swivel tie that can be adjusted to transfer the load laterally. In this day and age of farmhouse-style design, the option gives the traditional look of brick to your metal structure without the expense and weight. Brick veneer is water resistant as well as fire-resistant and helps in cooling and heating your structure.

           FAUX STONE AND ROCK

Another option found on metal structures and houses is faux rock or stone. It's a simple option to install on almost every surface. The faux stone veneer is an affordable alternative to real rock or stone and can add the same aesthetic appeal to your home. It is available in varieties of styles, colors, and shapes. The faux stone and rock veneers may be used to enhance your building's exterior finishes or used alone to add a unique look to your metal building.

A stucco exterior house offers endless design possibilities to homeowners who are conscious of their style.

Stucco offers more than just durability and low maintenance. It's also extremely versatile and can be used with a variety of architectural styles. Its simplicity makes it easy to draw attention and highlight other important details, like the front door, windows, railings, shutters, and railings.

Shutters add a beautiful touch to a stucco home's curb appeal. But there are so countless design options available that it begs the question: What shutter style should you choose? Here are ideas for sparking your imagination.

           Panel Shutters

It is possible to go wrong with simple panel shutters. The classic shutter style doesn't mean that your home is boring. See these examples:

           1. Arch Top Panel Shutters - Maximum "Wow!" Factor

This beautiful contemporary home truly takes our breath away with its stunning windows and shutters. We are particularly impressed by the two grand arched shutters with arch top panel shutters. The home's soft colors and soft illumination allow shutters to shine.

There are several shutter variants on this house. The bottom two windows are traditional panel shutters. They have a 50-50 layout. The second-floor window is operable louvered shutters. Inset windows in the middle of the house can be perfectly paired up with one-panel shutters. The multi-paned arched window has custom flat panel shutters. These shutters have radius tops and really grab attention.

The shutters look perfect; it's almost impossible to imagine a home without them.

           2. Premium wood panels for authentic charm

If you enjoy farmhouse charm and traditional design, there's plenty to love in this home. Premium wood is a great choice for shutters, adding a touch of authenticity to the historic look. The red wood shutters add an elegant touch to the room, with white trim around the doors and windows. The windchimes and dinner bell complete the look.

           3. Panel Shutters With Cutouts For A Personal Touch

It is amazing to see how little color splashes and a little creativity can bring a home's exterior to life. The homeowner decided to add blue panel shutters to her home's white stucco facade. She also added adorable custom cutouts on the shutter hardware. This kept the home's original charm while adding a little flair. It was the perfect finishing touch to add color to the porch by choosing a cherry red for the furniture and planting bright flowers along the front.

Although the overall design of the home is straightforward and well-symmetrical, it has a lot of personalities.

           Louvered Shutters

Some people love stucco due to its durability. Others appreciate its versatility. Optible louver shutters may be something you love if you are among the latter. Louver shutters can filter light and help airflow through windows, but they also look great in a variety of home styles.

Vinyl Siding vs. Stucco. Which is Better?

There are many choices when replacing the exterior of your house. One of the most controversial is vinyl siding or stucco. Which is better for your home and why?

Both options look great from the outside. But, for Midwest homeowners, one is better.

           What's Stucco?

Before we can say which is superior, you might wonder what stucco looks like. It's made by combining cement or earth with lime and silica. This produces a strong, durable material many homeowners choose to use as their exterior.

But, is it able to compete with America's most loved home cladding, vinyl siding? We're about as close to finding out as you are!

Stucco siding will make you pay way more.

Many homeowners decide on their home based solely on the price. While it's not something we recommend as the main factor, it's important. Stucco siding will be more costly than vinyl siding.

Stucco, which costs $6-$9/square ft, is the most expensive type of home cladding. Vinyl siding prices can vary greatly, but the best option isn't nearly as expensive.

So stucco costs more. This is a big disadvantage. However, it might be worth it if the product is better. You may be surprised to learn the answer.

Both options are energy-efficient, but only one is better.

Both stucco and vinyl siding are efficient for your home. They retain the heat and cool in your home, making it more comfortable in whatever season.

It's not just energy-efficient home cladding; it can also help you reduce your energy costs. Your furnace will use less energy because your furnace and air conditioner are able to trap the heated and cool air within your home. This will be shown on your monthly bill.

Both are excellent options, but vinyl siding is the better. Vinyl siding also includes foam insulation that's placed underneath the panels. It acts like a huge blanket that wraps around your house. Your home is completely sealed off from the outside.

Vinyl siding is simpler to maintain.

One major difference between stucco vs. vinyl is how much maintenance it requires. Stucco's colors fade over time. Your home will need to have its colors repainted to preserve its beauty.

Vinyl siding does not fade, and you don't have any worries about that. This is because the colors are baked into the siding panels when they are made. Vinyl siding that has been exposed to the sun's harmful radiations won't fade and will continue to look just as beautiful as when it was installed.

Vinyl siding will only need to be cleaned one time per year. It's easy to do in 45 minutes.

Plaster and Stucco: How They Differ?

A lot of people are confused by stucco and plaster when they look at old homes. While they're alike in many ways, they're different enough that knowing how and when to utilize stucco, particularly in renovations, is essential.

The differences are not evident to the untrained observer. Plaster and stucco may be applied in a similar manner, with similar different textures and thicknesses; however, the principal ingredients of each are what differentiate them as materials.

           Plaster versus Stucco

As we mentioned earlier, the ingredients are the key to distinguishing between these two comparable construction materials. Both are constructed with an aggregate of a certain kind, typically sand in various dimensions and different textures. Both require water to mix the materials and to activate the curing process.

The most important distinction is in the binder. Binders are what holds everything together and cure into the hard, rock-like consistency we all love and hate.

           Plaster

Based on the type of plaster you've got, you'll have two different binding agents, either lime or gypsum. Let's take a look at both.

            Lime -

Prior to the mid-1900s, lime was the principal binder of any plaster. In the past, it was less expensive to obtain than gypsum plasters. Lime plaster involves a difficult process of mixing lime and water and then waiting until the lime has time to "slake" before it can be added to sand for application. Lime also required the addition of fibrous materials like horsehair, which helps build up the wall. Lime plaster takes an extremely long time to cure and can take nearly a whole year before walls are decorated or painted.

            Gypsum -

Perhaps you've been familiar with Plaster in Paris? That's the gypsum plaster. The name was coined due to the fact that in the 1700s, Paris was constructed over the biggest natural gypsum deposits found in the world at the time. The majority of gypsum plaster was sourced from Paris, which is why its name stuck. In contrast to lime plaster, it cures quickly (only two days) and sets much quicker, which is the reason we cast broken limbs using the material. It doesn't typically require horsehair for its strength as lime plasters do.

           Stucco

You know what is plaster and what it's not, isn't it? What is stucco? Stucco, sometimes referred to as "render" by our neighbors across the water, is an external coating that is historically distinct from lime-based plasters.

Like lime plaster is made from slaked limestone (or any of the other natural binders, which are not as typical such as sand or water), it also had various additives that helped it resist the elements. According to the National Park Service Preservation Brief 22, stucco could contain some of these unique ingredients:

Mud, clay, marble or brick dust, sawdust, animal blood or urine, eggs, keratin or gluesize (animal hooves and horns), varnish, wheat paste, sugar, salt, sodium silicate, alum, tallow, linseed oil, beeswax, wine, beer, or rye whiskey. The oils, fats, and waxes were added to provide water repellent properties. Sugary substances decrease the amounts of water required and also slow the time required to set. Additionally, alcohol was an air entrainer.

Each of these additives helped to increase the durability and strength of the historic stucco. It was in 1824 that a brand new invention revolutionized the method of using stucco in building construction.

Portland cement was first developed around 1824 in England and was named so because its creator, Joseph Aspdin, thought that the concrete cured looked similar to Portland stone, that was a common construction material in England in the 1824 era.

           ADVICE FOR GARAGE LOADING FRONT

Do you have a dreaded front load garage? The garage occupies an excessive amount of space at the side of your property to just leave it alone. It's just like the elephant in the room. We say that you either keep it hidden or decorate it! You have so many choices for garage doors that even if you're looking to replace them, you'll find something stunning. If you're not ready to replace your garage, you can simply add garage hardware and paint the existing garage. This can make a world of an impact.

           BRICK COLOR TIPS

Are the bricks you have in your home getting you in a spin? The color you thought was amazing in the showroom might not translate as well to your home. The exterior of your home is influenced by the ugly appearance of brick. Brick is beautiful as well as durable and long-lasting. We love brick; however, there are times when the color isn't optimal. We suggest not to be afraid to seek out an expert painter to color your brick.

If your windows have become shabby, a good clean can make them appear new and freshen them up. Sometimes, adding trim around the window can bring new life to the space and give the appearance of bigger windows. Sometimes, windows appear aged due to the overgrown bushes on their sides. If you can clean and trim them. Windows are a must to determine the curb appeal of your home. If you're looking to replace your windows, consider it easy. We are awestruck by Marvin windows due to the quality, variety, and capability to build windows according to your preferences and dimensions.

           TIPS FOR THE FRONT DOOR

The home's front doors are the main aspect of your home and the place where you greet your guests. However, the front door is a crucial element of curb appeal; therefore, it needs to be beautiful as well as reflect your personal style. If done properly, a door will yield over 100 percent of the purchase. This means that most of the time, you'll earn more money when you decide to sell your home than you paid for the door in itself. It's a no-brainer! In the present, Dutch Doors are making an enormous return. Wood-stained doors are never going out of fashion.

           Solutions to Popcorn Ceiling

Are you constantly gazing up at your ceiling, looking up at the ugly stucco splatter that has been affixed to the fifth wall? You are not alone. Many homeowners are wondering what the purpose of their popcorn ceiling is, and, most importantly, what they can do to fix it. If you're bored of staring at the ceiling for hours on end, then it's time to make an upgrade. There are four options for popcorn ceilings that you'll enjoy gazing at.

           1. Start Fresh

If you've ever thought of carpeting your popcorn ceiling with a modern one, this solution is the best choice for you. One of the most straightforward alternatives to a popcorn ceiling is to replace the ceiling's drywall. It is possible to remove the popcorn ceiling and just put the drywall onto the ceiling you have. While your ceiling might be a bit lower than before it, it will not be evident. The addition of new drywall can help to protect asbestos that might be lurking within the ceiling. The cost of this project is approximately $6 per square foot, but the scale and the size of your project will determine the final price. Make sure you contact an expert in drywall to discuss the options available.

           2. Beautiful Beadboard

Our next on the list of options for an existing popcorn ceiling would be covering the ceiling with beadboard. This can provide an additional visual appeal in a strange location. It is possible to keep the wood natural to give it a rustic look as well as paint the boards white for them to be able to blend in. You could also paint your boards in with a color of your choice, unique and slightly different. Alongside the wide range of design options, beadboard is incredibly affordable and costs around $1 per square. It is possible to create something distinctive or stick to the classics by using this method. The best part is that it covers your popcorn ceiling with something stunning.

           3. Tin Tiles Pressed

If you're seeking an attractive design and don't mind spending money on your ceilings, you should consider using the idea of pressed tiles made of tin. No matter if you choose the real thing or an imitation, the addition of tin tiles to your ceiling will make for an attractive central area. These gorgeously detailed tiles will bring a classic style to your ceiling and will help it to stand out. These tiles are available in a wide range of colors and finishes or get them painted to match your wall color. Be aware of the price of tiles before making your choice since this will have the largest effect on your budget.

After you've settled on the style, you can engage an expert to install them to make sure that your popcorn ceiling is covered for the best.

           4. Ceiling Scraping

If none of these alternatives work for you, then you may opt to remove your stucco ceiling. If you choose this option, you should be certain to get a professional to take care of it. Removal of the stucco off your ceiling is known as ceiling scraping. It can be very difficult and labor-intensive. It is recommended to hire an expert to complete this task for you to ensure that you have an elegant and gorgeous ceiling possible. Expect to pay around $2 for each square foot of this work. While this may sound costly; however, it's worthwhile to ensure that a professional handles the removal of your stucco.

Removal of Mold as well as Stains from Stucco

The stucco exteriors of homes are usually located in areas that are usually humid and hot. This kind of climate could be a perfect breeding ground for the growth of mold. Stucco external walls are usually made of cement plaster. The porous material is a great way to absorb staining that is caused by mildew and mold. The mold usually has the appearance of black or brown, but it can appear as orange and red spots too. The removal of mold from the exterior of your stucco is an easy process, which can be accomplished in just a day. It is possible to remove the stainings by following a few easy steps.

           Step 1 - Prepare

Follow the directions that are provided by the company that makes the product you are using to remove the mold. Follow the instructions with care. Wear your safety glasses, masks, and rubber gloves. This will reduce the possibility of catching mold particles on your skin or inhaling the toxins into your lungs.

Step 2 - Rinse off the Stucco

Make use of your garden hose to wash all residue and debris off the stucco. The sprayer should be connected to your hose, then switch on the water. Start at the uppermost wall, and move lower as you wash all dirt off the wall surface.

Step 3 - Mix the Remover

Put the mold removal solution into the bucket. If the manufacturer suggests, add some water in order to lower its amount. Make use of a paint stir stick to mix the liquids into one liquid. Be sure to stir the mixture gently to ensure that no liquid spills out of the bucket.

You can create your own mold removal solution using dishwashing soap and borax. Fill the bucket to its capacity with 2 gallons of boiling water. Add 1/2 cup borax and 2 tablespoons detergent liquid to your water. Make sure to stir until all ingredients are dissolved.

Incorporate your sponge in the mixture for the removal of mold. Take the sponge out and squeeze out any liquid. Rub the sponge on the mold in a small amount. Put the sponge back in the mix and apply it to tiny areas of mold along the exterior walls. Continue to apply the solution for removing mold from all walls. If the spots are higher on the walls, you can use the ladder to access the wall. Ensure that the ladder is secured properly to prevent you from falling. If you can, take someone from your family or a friend on hand to secure the ladder. Let the mix sit on the stucco surface for around 30 minutes.

Make use of your cleaning brush with soft bristles to remove the stain from the stucco. Be cautious that you don't apply excessive pressure and cause damage to the exterior of the walls.

Take the spray attachment off your garden hose and then connect the power washer to it. Connect the power washer's power cord with an electric outlet. If needed, you can utilize the extension cable to access all the sections of the walls that have staining from mold. Make sure you utilize an extension cord approved for use outside with the power washer.

To stop mildew and mold from resurfacing, consult an expert about having fog coating paint applied to stucco walls. This paint is in powder form, which is mixed on-site with clean water. The paint is applied to the stucco surface using the help of a sprayer to create a uniform and even coverage. It is possible to locate an outside painting contractor in your local area that can give you information on how to safeguard the stucco walls.
